Chapter 6

A METAL BOX

With three of us working, the search went much faster than before. We had hardly been working five minutes when I uncovered a metal box and let out a whoop that resounded throughout the tunnel. Mose and Bill both turned and saw the latest discovery I was holding. Mose commented that I just seemed to have a sixth sense about where something was going to be found.

The box was approximately eight inches long, about six inches wide and had a depth of about two inches. For all the eight years that it must have lain here in the muck and water, it was in remarkably good shape and the hinged top was not corroded. Its size and weight suggested a jewel box and that it most certainly was full of something which remained to be seen.

I opened the box and before our eager eyes there was exposed… and here I want to say that if you have never been a treasure hunter, you have no understanding of our feelings when it was found to contain an element which in some instances may be regarded as more valuable than any jewel, but which in this instance was to us worthless, WATER. The gloom and depression which descended upon us could almost have been cut with a knife. For a few moments no one said anything. However after a few minutes Bill managed a weak laugh and said “Come on now Floyd, what did you do with the diamonds before you put the water in?” With that comment we all started laughing.

We then turned to examining the box. It was fairly apparent that it was of silver and as such was of some value. We added it to the pile of loot we already had in the bag and continued.
